LPWAN-based hybrid backhaul communication for intelligent transportation systems: architecture and performance evaluation

Abstract Increased number of the vehicles on streets around world has led to several problems including traffic congestion, emissions, and huge fuel consumption in many regions. With advances wireless technologies, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) been introduced as a viable solution for solving these by implementing more efficient use current infrastructures. In this paper, possibility using cellular-based Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) communications, LTE-M NB-IoT, ITS applications investigated. NB-IoT are designed provide long range, low power cost communication infrastructures can be promising option which potential employed immediately real systems. we have proposed an architecture employ LPWAN backhaul infrastructure understand feasibility model, two with high delay requirements examined: road monitoring emergency vehicle management. Then, performance providing evaluated realistic simulation environment compared scenarios terms end-to-end latency per user. Simulation Urban MObility used generation Python-based program developed evaluation system. The results demonstrate mostly favor over NB-IoT.
